What is a Margin Call? A Margin Call is when your broker notifies you that your Margin Level has fallen below the required minimum level (the “Margin Call Level”). This notification used to be an actual phone call, but nowadays, it’s usually an email or text message. Regardless of how you’re actually notified, the feeling isn’t great. ( Equity > Used Margin ) = NO MARGIN CALL. As soon as your Equity equals or falls below your Used Margin, you will receive a margin call. ( Equity =< Used Margin ) = MARGIN CALL, go back to demo trading! Let’s assume your margin requirement is 1%. You buy 1 lot of EUR/USD. Your Equity remains $10,000. Used Margin is now $100 because the margin required in a mini account is $100 per lot. Usable Margin is now $9,900. Margin call is more likely to occur when traders commit a large portion of equity to used margin, leaving very little room to absorb losses. So, basically, a margin call is not something any trader wants. Trading with leverage can be great since it allows you to open trades that you might not have the funds to otherwise, but there are obvious downsides as well.
